Plastic is Everywhere.
While studying abroad in Ecuador in the Summer of 2016, I had the privilege to visit The Universidad San Francisco de Quito on San Cristobal Island. There, I volunteered sorting plastic fragments that researchers were collecting around The Galapagos, many of which had travelled thousands of miles from neighboring countries.
This experience spurred me to bring the issue of plastic pollution into the public discourse through my art and design. I partnered with Dr. Jessica Hua and Professor Frank Chang at Binghamton University as part of the Binghamton University Summer Scholars & Artists Fellowship Program.
With their guidance and input, I further studied the impact that art can have on the perception, retention, and comprehension of science; this time, through the lens of plastic pollution.
This exhibit was developed based on publicly available plastic pollution research, my own experiences, and research published by The Hua Lab.
This exhibit was put on in the ground floor of the Bartle Library at Binghamton University in the Summer & Fall of 2017.
The exhibit featured four 24 x 36 in infographics designed to communicate how plastic is made, used, and how it impacts living things.
The next 3 sections elaborated on the ingestion, entanglement, and rafting impacts of plastic pollution.
Ingestion
This section featured information on how plastics chemically break down in the gut, with double-sided images highlight how we are not immune to this impact.
Entanglement
Deformities and death are described as very common impacts from wildlife becoming entangled in plastic debris, and this paper maché sculpture shows how we can help.
Rafting
Invasive species known to raft on plastic debris are featured here amongst debris, informing the viewer on some of the most common rafting invasives and how easily they can be hidden as they travel.
Plastic Tryptic
This illustration spans the three previous sections, each scene focused on oceanic ingestion, entanglement, and rafting in action.
Interactive & Informative
Microscopes
Visitors were able to view micro and nanoplastic to see just how small and pervasive plastic can be.
Binghamton, NY
This board connects the narrative of plastic pollution to Binghamton, NY. I travelled around the Tri-City Area during the Summer of 2017 photographing, picking up, and cleaning plastic debris.
Dig Site
This dig site showed visitors how plastic can break apart easily and can be found on land as well as in water.
Galapagos Islands
This board connects to plastic pollution abroad based on my study abroad experience in the Summer of 2016 in Ecuador.
Science Brochures
Visitors were encouraged to take a brochure with them, free of charge and instilled with information on what they, their friends, and community can do at the local, state, and national levels to address plastic debris.
Plastic Wildlife
Dream it.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Grow it.
